Yesterday, movie rental company Netflix released its official application for the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch that allows its subscribers to manage their accounts and stream selections from their “Watch Instantly” queue.
The release follows the unveiling of a similar app for the iPad in April and the June announcement that other Apple products would soon follow suit. Netflix’s app is entirely free, but does require at least the basic .99 subscription to their service. I’ll assume you love movies, since you’re reading News in Film, so you should already have an account or should seriously consider signing up.
The layout is extremely simple and allows users to search for movie and television titles, browse genres, and peruse both of their queues. Tapping “Play” on a movie you were halfway through resumes your video at that point. Load times are short (roughly 10-15 seconds on 3G) and the video quality is surprisingly good. I haven’t experienced any stuttering streams, even on 3G, and while using WiFi the picture is excellent (for such a small screen). Obviously, the limiting factor here is battery life, so be wary of how much juice you have left when powering through episodes of “Arrested Development” at work.
