Iron Man 21. “Iron Man 2″ ($53 million)
2. “Robin Hood” ($37.1 million)
3. “Letters to Juliet” ($13.8 million)
4. “Just Wright” ($8.5 million)
5. “How To Train Your Dragon” ($5.1 million)

When it comes to battling a high tech superhero for box office supremacy, it would be wise to pack some heavier firepower than a quiver filled with arrows. Director Ridley Scott apparently didn’t get that memo, as “Robin Hood” succumbed to the might of “Iron Man 2″ at the weekend box office.

Playing on over 4,000 screens this weekend, the “Iron Man” franchise continued to soar past its competition with an impressive $53 million haul, a 58.6 percent drop from last weekend’s opening performance. The Marvel Studios feature has earned $428.2 million internationally.

Although it didn’t bring home the gold medal, “Robin Hood” earned a respectable second place finish worth $37.1 million. The movie grossed an estimated $74 million from overseas markets, resulting in a worldwide tally of $111.1 million. It’s a nice chunk out of the Russell Crowe-starring film’s $200 million budget, but with a surefire success like “Shrek Forever After” popping into theaters next weekend and the “Sex and the City” sequel one weekend later, it might take some time for “Robin Hood” to cross the profit line.

Newcomers “Letters to Juliet” and “Just Wright” snagged third and fourth place with $13.8 million and $8.5 million respectively. “How To Train Your Dragon” flew into the top five with a $5.1 million finish, snatching fifth place out of the clawed hands of “A Nightmare on Elm Street.”

Iron Man 21. “Iron Man 2″ ($15 million)
2. “Robin Hood” ($13.1 million)
3. “Letters to Juliet” ($5 million)
4. “Just Wright” ($2.9 million)
5. “A Nightmare on Elm Street” ($1.5 million)

Although the effort was certainly admirable, it’s simply a fact of life: arrows are not strong enough to penetrate Tony Stark’s high tech armor. “Iron Man 2″ once again soared to the top spot on Friday, beating “Robin Hood” with a solid $15 million intake in its eighth day at the box office.

After its first week at the box office, “Iron Man 2″ has earned an impressive $174.1 million at the domestic box office. Internationally, Marvel’s superhero sequel has made $216 million with a worldwide total of $375.2 million. Not a shabby result at all considering the film’s reported $200 million production budget.

Continued success for “Iron Man 2″ meant a disappointing opening for Universal’s “Robin Hood,” the medieval movie from “Gladiator” collaborators Ridley Scott and star Russell Crowe. The film drew an estimated $13.1 million from showings on Friday, causing some doubt that “Robin Hood” will meet the $40 million weekend that many analysts had anticipated.

Ranking in third place was “Letters to Juliet,” the romantic drama from Summit Entertainment starring Amanda Seyfried. The film earned $5 million on Friday. Fox Searchlight’s “Just Wright,” starring Queen Latifah, Pam Grier and rapper Common, came in fourth with $2.9 million.

Platinum Dunes’ horror remake of the iconic “A Nightmare on Elm Street” clawed its way into a fifth place finish worth $1.5 million during its third Friday in theaters.
