Inception1. “Inception” (.5 million)
2. “Dinner for Schmucks” (.3 million)
3. “Salt” (.3 million)
4. “Despicable Me” (.5 million)
5. “Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore” (.5 million)

So much for the “Schmucks.” Despite the best efforts of “Anchorman” and “40 Year-Old Virgin” co-stars Steve Carell and Paul Rudd, their latest comedic effort “Dinner for Schmucks” wasn’t enough to topple the mind-boggling action extravaganza that is director Christopher Nolan’s “Inception.”

After its third weekend in theaters, Nolan’s “Inception” remains the movie to beat at the box office. Winning .5 million this weekend, “Inception” has barreled past its 0 million production budget with 3.3 million domestic and .7 million in foreign markets, with a very impressive worldwide total of 9 million.

Despite landing in second place for its first weekend in theaters, “Dinner for Schmucks” deserves more credit than its title would have you believe. After earning .3 million from Friday through Sunday, the comedy still has a way to go before earning back its reported million production budget. The film’s foreign box office performance could push “Schmucks” further, but those numbers are currently unavailable.

Certainly, “Schmucks” did better than its incoming competitors “Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore” and “Charlie St. Cloud.” The “Cats & Dogs” sequel snagged the last spot in the weekend’s elite top five performers with .5 million, still a disappointment considering the film’s million production budget. Zac Efron’s latest underperformed as well, landing in sixth place with .1 million.

“Salt” and “Despicable Me” finished the top five at third and fourth place, respectively.

5. “Toy Story 3″ (.7 million)

The mind is the scene of the crime, and judging by the weekend’s box office results, many of you were witnesses as Christopher Nolan’s “Inception” arrived in theaters this weekend with enough fanfare to score an easy first place finish ahead of it’s competitors.

Starring an impressive cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page and more, Nolan’s “Inception” emerged from it’s first weekend at the box office with a gold medal worth .4 million, a very impressive result for a major blockbuster without any previously established material to back it up. With rave reviews from critics and moviegoers alike, look for “Inception” to stay towards the top of the box office charts for several weeks to come. But it isn’t a home run just yet — the film still has a ways to go before it recoups it’s reported 0 million production budget, something that will surely be helped as “Inception” rolls out overseas over the next few weeks.

Coming in second place was “Despicable Me,” continuing it’s impressive run with .7 million earned for its second weekend at the box office. To date, the movie has earned a mighty 8.4 million haul domestically, already guaranteeing it’s status as a surefire hit.

Not as sure a success is Nicolas Cage and Jay Baruchel’s “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” which earned only .4 million this weekend for a total of .5 million since debuting last Wednesday. With a reported 0 million production budget, it’s clear that Disney’s latest magic trick could use a little bit of work.

Rounding out the weekends top five performers was “Eclipse” and “Toy Story 3″ with .5 million and .7 million, respectively. Next weekend sees the arrival of Angelina Jolie’s action flick “Salt” and family film “Ramona and Beezus.”
